Dr Yash Jain from Kantabanji, Balangir district in Odisha, has topped the NEET Super Speciality (NEET-SS) 2024 exam, securing All India Rank 1. Conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, New Delhi, the prestigious exam saw Dr Jain score an impressive 498 out of 600. The 27-year-old, son of businessman Sunil Jain, completed his MBBS before pursuing a postgraduate degree at Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur.
The NEET Super Speciality (NEET-SS) exam is held for admissions into super-specialty medical institutes across India. This marks a historic achievement for Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, as Dr Jain is the first resident doctor from the institute to secure the top rank. Until now, no student from any medical college in the Vidarbha region had ever achieved this distinction.
According to a media report, approximately 2,000 super-specialty seats are available across the country, with nearly 15,000 candidates appearing for the NEET-SS exam. Among them, Dr Yash Jain secured the top rank. He is currently in the final year of his residency in the Surgery Department and now plans to pursue MCh in Gastroenterology from an institute in New Delhi.
Speaking about his achievement, Dr Jain shared that his family was proud of his success in the NEET-SS exam. Balancing his duties as a resident doctor at GMCH with his exam preparation, he emphasized that patient care always remained his top priority. He credited his seniors and teachers for their support and guidance throughout his journey.
Dr Jain completed his MBBS from King Edward Memorial College, Mumbai, and pursued his postgraduate studies at GMCH, Nagpur, where he served in Surgery Unit One. The NEET-SS 2024 exam was conducted on March 29 and 30, 2025, for admission to various DM, MCh, and DrNB super-specialty courses across India.
Fulfilling His Grandfather’s Dream
Dr Yash Jain recalled that when he left his village in 2012 to pursue a career in medicine, there were already two IAS officers and four engineers from his hometown, but not a single doctor. With no hospital facilities nearby, villagers had to travel nearly 100 kilometres for medical treatment—a reality that deeply troubled his grandfather, the late Liluram Jain. It was his grandfather’s dream to see someone from the family become a doctor, and Dr Yash takes pride in having fulfilled that dream.
From a Small Village in Odisha to AIR 1
