The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to build four foot overbridges on the busy Koradi Road, following suggestions from the City Police. NHAI has approved a budget of Rs 7.11 crore for this project, aiming to remove the need for surface crossings. Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule shared that Union Minister Nitin Gadkari supported the Traffic Police’s suggestion to prevent accidents, especially in the crowded residential areas on both sides of the flyover and RoB on Koradi Road.
According to a media report in a local daily, during the recent Road Safety Authority meeting, the traffic police raised concerns about the increased speed on Koradi Road due to the connecting flyovers. To address this, four foot overbridges will be built with landing points at key intervals, mostly at the squares, to help pedestrians avoid crossing the mid-surface between the two flyovers. NHAI awarded the project in March to M/s Oriental Nagpur-Betul Highway Limited.
The series of flyovers on the Nagpur-Betul highway was completed in 2015, with provisions for service roads in the built-up areas and openings at various intersections. However, with the rise in motor traffic and increased driving speeds, the police noticed that one of the main reasons for the increase in accidents on Koradi Road was pedestrians crossing the surface. To address this issue, the City Police instructed the barricading of openings on the flyovers and at landings, which caused inconvenience to citizens who needed to cross for their work.
Four locations have been identified for the construction of foot overbridges (FOBs): near Modern School Square, Panjra Bus Stop, Shivaji Maharaj Square (near Chakradhar Kirana Store), and near Koradi Bus Stop. Koradi Road is home to several restaurants, schools, colleges, and small businesses, resulting in heavy movement of people on both sides of the service roads.
