Tobacco consumption continues to be a grave public health challenge, causing a wide spectrum of life-threatening illnesses. It is a leading cause of cancer, particularly lung cancer, but it also significantly increases the risk of cancers in the mouth, larynx, esophagus, stomach, bladder, kidney, and pancreas. Tobacco use contributes to serious lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and chronic bronchitis, and is a key driver of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attack, stroke, and hypertension. Smoking weakens the immune system, making users more vulnerable to respiratory infections like pneumonia and tuberculosis. Additionally, tobacco negatively affects oral health, leading to gum disease, tooth discoloration, and oral cancers.

The harmful effects extend to reproductive health, increasing risks of infertility, pregnancy complications, and premature birth. It can also lead to erectile dysfunction, premature aging, and skin damage. Alarmingly, even secondhand smoke can harm others — especially children, who face heightened risks of respiratory infections and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
In response to this health crisis and in support of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur has launched a comprehensive, month-long initiative to promote early detection and preventive care. This initiative is guided by the theme: “Save Your Smoker Friend & Become a Wockhardt-Nagpur Life Saver.” from 1st May to 31st May 2025.
“As physicians, we witness daily how devastating tobacco can be to a person’s heart health. Early detection can truly save lives,” said Dr. Nitin Tiwari, Consultant – Cardiology.
Dr. Jayesh Timane, Consultant – Internal Medicine & Critical Care, added, “Tobacco silently damages the body’s vital systems. Awareness and regular screening are key steps towards prevention.”
Mr. Ravi Bagali, Center Head – Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur, stated, “This initiative is our commitment to a healthier Nagpur. Together, we can build a stronger, tobacco-free community.”
As part of this campaign, Wockhardt’s experts will also host educational talks and digital awareness drives to promote tobacco-free living. To motivate community involvement, the hospital will honor the individual or doctor who refers the highest number of abnormal screening cases with a special surprise gift and a free health coupon (T&C apply). Their message will be highlighted across Wockhardt’s digital platforms in recognition of their life-saving efforts.
