Kanhan is facing a worsening garbage crisis that has raised serious concerns among residents and environmental advocates. In the Junni Kamthi Gadeghat area, domestic waste collected by the municipal council is being openly burned, releasing foul odors and toxic smoke. This practice not only causes considerable discomfort to nearby residents but also poses a major threat to the environment.
Numerous livestock have died after consuming the discarded waste. Despite the severity of the situation, the Kanhan Municipal Administration remains silent and has made no visible effort to address the problem.
Residents allege that despite an expenditure of Rs 73.80 lakh over the past two years on waste classification, there has been no visible improvement in waste management. The area still lacks a proper disposal system, resulting in stray cattle consuming hazardous waste, which has led to widespread illness and the death of several animals.”
Prominent figures, including former MP Prakash Jadhav, former Zilla Parishad Vice President Sharad Donekar, and Kanhan Municipal Vice President Yogesh Rangari, along with numerous concerned citizens, have repeatedly brought this issue to the attention of the administration. Despite their efforts, no concrete action has been taken. This continued negligence has put the health and well-being of local residents at serious risk.
