Nearly four months after a portion of the Butibori flyover partially caved in, repair work is now in progress, with traffic expected to resume within the next 25 days. However, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has yet to announce an official deadline for the completion of the restoration.
The flyover, which suffered a 100 mm subsidence on December 24, continues to impact traffic flow at the busy Butibori junction, where vehicles are moving at a snail’s pace due to ongoing construction activity.
Sources familiar with the project revealed that the iron scaffolding currently supporting the sunken section is scheduled to be dismantled within the next 15 days. Following that, it will take approximately 10 more days before the bridge is reopened to vehicular movement, subject to safety clearances.
The cantilever beams of the affected portion have reportedly been repaired, and the top surface of the bridge will be reinforced with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets. Once the reinforcement is complete, a structural load test will be conducted. If the bridge passes the test, it will be deemed safe for use and reopened to the public.
An expert team from the NHAI’s headquarters visited the site weeks after the incident. The delay in both the assessment report and initiation of repairs contributed to the extended timeline. Attempts to reach the NHAI’s regional officer and project director for comment were unsuccessful.
