The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a stern advisory in response to a fake notice circulating on social media. The false notice falsely claimed that all university exams in India had been cancelled due to a “war-like situation” and misleadingly urged students to return home.
The clarification was issued shortly after India conducted targeted airstrikes under Operation Sindoor, aimed at destroying terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). These strikes were a response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which was believed to have been carried out by members of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the UGC clarified:
“A fabricated public notice is being circulated under the name of UGC, claiming that all exams are cancelled due to a war situation and advising students to return home. UGC confirms this notice is fake. There are no such directions from UGC.”
The commission emphasised that all official announcements will only be made via the UGC website and its verified social media handles. It also warned that spreading misinformation is a punishable offence under Indian law.
“Don’t fall prey to false information. Stay vigilant and refer only to official UGC sources,” the statement added.
In the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, Pakistan violated the Ceasefire Agreement by initiating artillery fire in the Bhimber Gali sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch-Rajouri region. In response, the Indian Army took a measured and calibrated approach, as confirmed by the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) on X.
