In response to growing security threats following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and cross-border strikes by Pakistan, at least 24 airports located near India’s western frontier have been temporarily shut down. The directive was issued through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), as per government sources.
The precautionary closures come after Pakistan reportedly launched a series of drone and missile attacks on Thursday, targeting areas in Jammu, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Indian defence systems successfully intercepted the threats, but the alert level remains high.
The suspended airports span across multiple states and union territories, including:
Punjab: Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Bathinda, Halwara, Pathankot
Himachal Pradesh: Bhuntar, Shimla, Kangra-Gaggal
Chandigarh (UT): Chandigarh
Jammu and Kashmir (UT): Srinagar, Jammu
Ladakh (UT): Leh
Rajasthan: Kishangarh, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner
Gujarat: Mundra, Jamnagar, Hirasar, Porbandar, Keshod, Kandla, Bhuj
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled or rerouted as a result, affecting thousands of passengers. Airlines across the country have advised travellers to arrive at least three hours before departure due to intensified security screenings.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has directed all airports to implement stricter checks, including mandatory Secondary Ladder Point Checks (SLPC) for all passengers at the boarding gate. Additionally, visitor entry to terminal buildings has been banned, and the deployment of Air Marshals is being increased to enhance in-flight security.
Aviation ministry officials confirmed that heightened surveillance and coordination with local law enforcement are in place, especially at high-risk airports. The situation remains under close observation as civil and defence authorities continue to respond to unfolding developments along the border.
