In a significant administrative action, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has annulled 783 birth and death certificates issued between August 11, 2023, and January 21, 2025. The move comes after a directive from the Maharashtra Revenue and Forest Department, which found procedural violations in the way these documents were authorized.
The cancelled certificates were reportedly approved by Naib Tehsildar-level officers, who, according to state regulations, are not empowered to authorize delayed birth or death registrations. Under current rules, such approvals must come from officials of Tehsildar rank or higher.
The revocation of these documents is part of a broader crackdown on fraudulent certification practices across the state. Authorities are currently investigating a widespread scam in which over 3,000 forged birth certificates are believed to have been issued using falsified documentation.
The scam surfaced following enforcement raids in Malegaon and is suspected to have aided foreign nationals—including undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh and members of the Rohingya community—in unlawfully obtaining Indian identity documents.
Officials have stated that further scrutiny is underway and additional actions may follow as the investigation progresses.
