Another deadly accident on the Ramjhula flyover has reignited public concern over reckless driving on city flyovers. The latest incident, drawing parallels with the infamous 2024 Mercedes crash, has exposed the glaring lack of surveillance infrastructure on these high-speed stretches.
With no CCTV cameras on Ramjhula itself, police had to rely on footage from entry and exit points to trace the vehicle involved in the recent crash. This limitation has prompted urgent action from authorities.
To curb the growing number of road mishaps, the Nagpur Traffic Police, in partnership with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), will now begin installing speed detection cameras on flyovers across the city. The move falls under the Intelligent Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) project aimed at improving road safety and enforcement.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Archit Chandak, stated that a joint survey of flyovers was conducted recently to identify strategic locations for these cameras. “We’ve seen repeated incidents of fatal crashes caused by speeding and rash driving. These cameras will help monitor vehicle speeds and deter traffic violations,” he said.
Chandak acknowledged that several existing CCTV cameras in the city, including those near flyovers, are currently non-operational due to ongoing development and construction work. He assured that the damaged cameras are being addressed in coordination with concerned departments.
Despite the absence of full flyover surveillance, DCP Chandak noted that footage from adjacent areas has been instrumental in identifying suspects in past accidents. However, he emphasized the need for direct speed monitoring to ensure long-term deterrence.
Commenting on the root causes behind such accidents, Chandak pointed to human negligence as the leading factor. “Overspeeding, driving on the wrong side, ignoring traffic rules, and occasional mechanical failures are all contributors. Better enforcement and public awareness are crucial,” he said.
Authorities hope that the introduction of speed cameras will reduce risky behavior and make Nagpur’s flyovers safer for commuters.
