With tensions between India and Pakistan continuing to rise following the terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives, the Nagpur Cyber Police have intensified their monitoring of social media to curb the spread of misinformation and provocative content. In a recent incident, a youth from Kerala was apprehended for sharing an objectionable Instagram post criticizing India’s counter-terrorism operation, ‘Operation Sindoor’.
The individual, identified as Rejaz M Sheeba Sydeek, allegedly made remarks that were deemed to undermine national security efforts. Acting swiftly, Cyber Police took action to prevent the spread of such posts, which have the potential to incite unrest or disrupt communal harmony.
The crackdown follows a high-level security review meeting held on Friday, chaired by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, where discussions focused on statewide preparedness, including mock drills and district war rooms. The Chief Minister also issued a clear warning against the circulation of fake news on social media, instructing law enforcement agencies to take strict action against violators.
In Nagpur, Cyber Police under the leadership of DCP Lohit Matani have launched a dedicated drive to monitor platforms like Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and WhatsApp. Special teams have been formed to track digital content that could spread fear, misinformation, or promote anti-national narratives.
“Specific instructions have been issued to our cyber units to closely monitor and act against any content that attempts to disturb social harmony or supports enemy propaganda. Legal action will be initiated against those involved in such activities,” said DCP Matani.
He also appealed to the public to avoid posting or forwarding unverified or inflammatory content on social media, especially in group chats. Instead, he advised citizens to refer to verified sources such as PIB Fact Check for accurate information.
Given Nagpur’s previous experiences with violence fueled by fake news on social platforms, authorities have adopted a zero-tolerance approach to ensure peace and security in the city during this sensitive period.
