Former India opener Gautam Gambhir appears set to assume a role of unprecedented authority as the prospective head coach of the Indian cricket team, with reports indicating he could wield more influence than the captain, a rare shift in Indian cricket’s traditional power structure.
According to sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Gambhir is firm on dismantling the long-standing “star culture” in the dressing room and ushering in a new era defined by meritocracy and fresh faces, particularly in the longest format of the game.
“The Gautam Gambhir era begins now,” said a senior BCCI official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “He was very clear that during the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, India needs to undergo a generational shift. His views are in alignment with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, especially regarding the future of senior players.”
Historically, Indian cricket has functioned with the captain as the dominant force — from Sourav Ganguly to M.S. Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and currently Rohit Sharma, each has held considerable sway over team decisions. Coaches, even those with strong personalities, have typically played second fiddle.
That equation may be set to change.
With Gambhir likely to take over the reins as head coach, insiders believe he will emerge as the most influential figure in Indian cricket. If current planning materializes, Gambhir is expected to work with a younger captain, likely Shubman Gill, who may initially defer to the coach’s experience and vision.
The only senior player seen as capable of independently asserting himself was pacer Jasprit Bumrah, but ongoing fitness concerns have reportedly reduced his influence in leadership matters.
“Gambhir is expected to have a free hand moving forward, much like the control he already enjoys in the T20 setup,” another official added.
As the BCCI finalizes coaching appointments ahead of the upcoming WTC cycle, it is evident that the balance of power is shifting. Whether this new dynamic will lead to long-term success remains to be seen, but one thing is clear — Indian cricket is on the cusp of a significant transformation.
