The Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) is set to resume on May 17, following a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. The tournament had been briefly suspended amid escalating tensions between the two nations.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had halted the league for a week, but its early resumption comes as a relief to fans and players, after both countries agreed to cease hostilities along the border.
According to the press release, the BCCI decided to resume the remainder of IPL 2025 after “extensive consultation with government and security agencies and all key stakeholders.”
As per the revised plan, the remaining 17 matches will be held across six cities: Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Mumbai. Four of these matches will be part of the IPL 2025 playoffs, though venues for the playoff games are yet to be finalised. The updated schedule also includes two double headers, with the final set to take place on June 3.
According to the original schedule, the IPL 2025 final was supposed to be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata – the home of defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). However, a Cricbuzz report suggests that the BCCI will likely shift the summit clash from Kolkata to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The decision has nothing to do with the India-Pakistan conflict, but the upcoming monsoon cycle. According to weather forecasts, the weather in Kolkata looks gloomy, and the City of Joy is expected to receive heavy rainfall on the day of the final.
Kolkata is now likely to miss out on hosting the two playoff matches, including the final, which were earlier planned at the venue. The BCCI is closely watching the monsoon situation, and a final call on the venues will be taken based on weather developments.
