Orange alert issued for May 14-15
Nagpur and several other districts of the Vidarbha region are set to experience unseasonal rainfall from Tuesday to Friday, offering much-needed relief from the scorching heat. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued orange and yellow alerts for the period, forecasting thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, along with rainfall at isolated locations.
Orange alerts have been issued for Wardha, Chandrapur, and Yavatmal on Wednesday, and for Bhandara, Gondia, and Gadchiroli on Thursday. Yellow alerts are in place for the entire region through Friday.
The monsoon has become active over the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where good rainfall is expected. The system is likely to progress further, with the monsoon predicted to reach Tamil Nadu by May 27.
These developments have brought cloudy weather and rainfall across Vidarbha. The weather office has predicted above-normal rainfall for the region this year. In the past few days, most districts have witnessed thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. The sky is expected to remain overcast for the next two days, with chances of moderate rainfall in some districts on Wednesday and Thursday.
May is typically the hottest month in Nagpur and Vidarbha, often recording peak daytime temperatures. However, due to the current weather changes, temperatures have dropped significantly. In Nagpur, the temperature fell from 39.6°C to 35.9°C within 24 hours—7.1°C below the normal for this time of year.
On Monday, Buldhana recorded the lowest temperature at 34.5°C. Other districts recorded the following temperatures (in °C): Akola – 40.6, Chandrapur – 40.6, Brahmapuri – 39.1, Gadchiroli – 40.6, Gondia – 37.8, Wardha – 36.5, Washim – 37.6, and Yavatmal – 39.0.
