The Maharashtra Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has taken a serious note of absenteeism in Class XI and XII across the state. The Board has introduced biometric attendance for the two classes, with a compulsion of at least 75 percent attendance by the students. The Biometric System will use either facial recognition or thumb impression to track the attendance of the students. The system will be enforced from the 2025-2026 academic year.
The biometric attendance will have to be used by the schools and colleges under the Board to facilitate recognition of the junior colleges, allowing the students without the required attendance.
The introduction of the system would also curb the tendency of junior colleges to collaborate with private tuition classes. The students attending particular tuition classes are allowed to bunk the college classes.
The proposal was mooted a few years ago, but the implementation was deferred due to strong opposition from the parents.
