A minimally invasive, robot-assisted surgery was performed on the patient to remove the tumor.
The patient,Afzal Ansari, was presented to us on 08th January 2025 in critical condition, experiencing severe respiratory distress, breathing difficulties, and muscle weakness. Initial treatment was administered under a multidisciplinary team of doctors – Dr. Nitin Wadaskar, Senior Physician – Internal Medicine, Dr.Ketan Chaturvedi, Director – Neurology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur.Post thorough evaluation,it was revealed thatthe patient has an ectopic thymomatumor, and based on the diagnosis, a surgical intervention of using the Da Vinci Xi robotic system was advised.
The surgery was led by Dr. Amol Dongre, Director, Oncology, and Dr. Abhinav Deshpande, Director, Surgical Oncology & Robotic Onco-Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Amol Dongre, Director, Oncology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, said, “Given the patient’s unusual symptoms and the severity of his condition made us consider a rare underlying cause. Upon clinical evaluation,we identified an ectopic thymoma tumor. To confirm this, we recommended histopathological tests, which were key in deciding the right course of treatment.Beforethe surgery, the medical team administered immunoglobulin therapy (a mixture of antibodies to treat conditions involving immune deficiencies or autoimmune disease) to stabilize his infection due to an autoimmune condition.”
Dr. Abhinav Deshpande, Director,Surgical Oncology & Robotic Onco-Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, said, “This was one of the most challenging surgeries we have performed, as it involved a rare type of tumour located outside the usual position of the thymus gland and had spread close to the heart. After the tests confirmed the nature of the tumour, the patient opted for robot-assisted surgery, understanding the benefits of the state-of-the-art Da Vinci Xi robot, which offers 3D high-definition imaging of the surgical area. This life-saving surgical procedure makes it one of the rarest and complex cases. As a result of this minimally invasive approach, the patient was mobilised within four days of the surgery.Currently, the patient has recovered well and is living a normal life.”
