The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has declined to grant interim relief to Isha Priya Kumar, a final-year student at Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur, who challenged her suspension following a contentious Instagram post related to the Centre’s recent military action, ‘Operation Sindoor’.
Kumar’s suspension was initiated by the college director on May 10, 2025, pending an inquiry. The disciplinary action stemmed from a post on her official Instagram account, which allegedly contradicted the government’s narrative on the cross-border military operation against Pakistan.
In addition to her suspension from all academic and non-academic activities, Kumar has been barred from appearing in internal, semester, and backlog examinations, which began on May 15. The Campus Disciplinary Committee (CDC), in its May 13 meeting, upheld this decision, stating that the suspension would remain in effect until further notice. The college informed the court that the CDC inquiry is expected to conclude by May 25.
During the hearing, Symbiosis counsel Adv. K.P. Mahalle assured the bench that, in the event of Kumar’s exoneration, a special examination would be arranged to prevent any academic setback.
The student has also come under scrutiny for her alleged association with Rejaz M. Sheeba Sydeek, a Kerala native who was arrested on May 8 by Lakadganj Police from a hotel in Nagpur. Sydeek has been booked for social media posts against Operation Sindoor and is suspected of having links with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI.
Symbiosis presented documents in court citing multiple politically sensitive posts made by Kumar, including one that appeared to counter the government’s stance on the military operation.
The court proceedings saw representations from Adv. S.S. Jachak for the state, Adv. S. Kulkarni for the petitioner, and Adv. K.P. Mahalle for Symbiosis Law School.
