Once a bustling center of civic and cultural activity, Kasturchand Park is now witnessing a significant transformation as the State Public Works Department (PWD) leads an extensive restoration and beautification drive. The Grade-I heritage site, which had suffered years of neglect, is regaining its lost charm through a project approved by the Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC).
The historic park, known for hosting public gatherings, political rallies, and cultural programs, had fallen into disrepair due to structural deterioration and misuse. However, PWD officials have confirmed that more than 90% of the restoration work is now complete.
“We’ve restored original elements using crushed stone, and where structural damage was irreparable, replacements were made—for instance, installing protective nets on the upper floor,” a senior PWD engineer stated. “Only the flooring remains to be completed, and we’re targeting a mid-June finish.” The total expenditure for restoration and associated beautification efforts has exceeded Rs 5 crore.
At the heart of the project lies the refurbishment of the park’s iconic stone bandstand. Skilled artisans from Rajasthan have been brought in to repair water-damaged columns, broken grills, and crumbling parapets—ensuring that heritage conservation is executed with architectural precision.
Complementing the restoration is a beautification plan that includes the erection of a 200-foot national flagpole and the creation of an open-air amphitheatre. These additions are aimed at enhancing public engagement while preserving the historical essence of the park.
To safeguard the revitalized site, the department is considering installing protective barricades around the central structure. “This is not just about restoring the monument, but about preserving it for future generations,” the official emphasized.
Plans are also underway in collaboration with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to establish a sustainable water supply system for the park’s newly landscaped areas.
With its central location, expansive grounds, and upgraded infrastructure, Kasturchand Park is expected to evolve into a key heritage-cum-recreational space. Officials have proposed the development of a sports arena within the premises, positioning the park as a multifaceted destination for both locals and tourists.
