A fresh wave of Covid-19 is spreading across parts of Asia, with Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand reporting an increase in cases. This surge is mainly caused by new Omicron sub-variants like JN.1 and its offshoots LF.7 and NB.1.8. Meanwhile, India currently has 257 active Covid-19 cases, most of which are mild and do not require hospitalization, according to official data.
Maharashtra has seen a significant increase in active Covid cases over the past week, rising from 12 to 56 cases. As of Monday, the country has reported at least 257 active Covid cases, with Maharashtra ranking second in the number of infections. Kerala reports the highest count with 95 active cases, including one Covid-related death.
Other states reporting new cases include Karnataka (8), Gujarat (6), Delhi (3), and one case each in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Sikkim.
In Mumbai, two recent Covid-19 related deaths were reported at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital. Doctors revealed that both patients had severe underlying health issues — one was a 14-year-old suffering from kidney failure due to nephrotic syndrome, and the other was a 54-year-old cancer patient.
Health experts have warned that India may see a rise in cases as immunity wanes across the population.
What are the symptoms of the JN.1 variant?
Health authorities say the symptoms of the JN.1 variant are largely similar to previous Omicron strains, including:
• Sore throat
• Fever
• Runny or blocked nose
• Dry cough
• Headache
• Fatigue
• Loss of taste or smell
Some patients have also reported more intense exhaustion than in previous waves. Most cases remain mild and can be managed at home with rest and hydration. However, the severity of illness can vary based on age, existing health conditions, and individual immunity levels.
With pre-monsoon illnesses already impacting parts of the country, doctors advise everyone to stay cautious. People experiencing flu-like symptoms should avoid crowded places, wear masks in public, and get tested if necessary. As the virus continues to evolve, health experts worldwide emphasize the importance of good hygiene and seeking early medical advice to minimize the risk of severe illness.
