Since January 2025, Maharashtra has seen a steady rise in Covid-19 infections, with 106 positive cases detected from 6,066 samples tested. Notably, Mumbai accounts for the vast majority, reporting 101 of these cases, and currently has 101 active infections.
Mumbai has reported two Covid-related deaths, both involving patients with existing comorbidities. Currently, 52 patients are receiving treatment for mild symptoms, with 16 of them hospitalised.
The Maharashtra Health Department emphasized that, despite the increase in Covid-19 cases, infections remain relatively rare and mostly mild. Daily testing continues as part of the ongoing Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) surveillance programs. Meanwhile, genome sequencing is being conducted in Pune to keep track of any new virus variants.
The department highlighted that the increase in Covid-19 cases is not limited to Maharashtra but is also being reported in other Indian states as well as countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, and regions across East Asia. Despite this rise, officials have urged the public to remain calm.
“Covid is now an endemic illness, with rare and sporadic cases,” the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated in a release. “The virus continues to circulate at the community level, but with low transmission intensity.”
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified surveillance and is fully prepared to handle any potential spike in Covid-19 cases. Civic-run facilities like Seven Hills and Kasturba Hospital have been equipped with dedicated Covid wards. Seven Hills Hospital currently houses 20 MICU beds, 20 beds reserved for children and pregnant women, and 60 general beds. Kasturba Hospital has two ICU beds along with a 10-bed special ward, which can be expanded if the situation demands.
The most commonly reported symptoms include fever, dry or phlegmy cough, sore throat, fatigue, body aches, headaches, and, in some cases, a loss of taste or smell. The BMC has urged individuals experiencing any of these symptoms to seek medical attention promptly at municipal clinics or hospitals.
Precautions for High-Risk Groups
While reassuring the public that there is no cause for panic, the BMC emphasized the need for vigilance—particularly among high-risk individuals, including those with diabetes, hypertension, cancer, or liver ailments. Authorities advise symptomatic individuals to wear masks, maintain physical distancing, wash hands regularly, and adopt a balanced diet along with sufficient rest. These simple preventive measures can go a long way in protecting vulnerable populations.
