The Maharashtra State Election Commission has officially initiated the process of ward delimitation for upcoming local body elections, following a recent directive from the Supreme Court. The polls, pending for over five years due to the OBC reservation dispute, are now expected to be held by the end of the year.
The Supreme Court, in its May 6 ruling, instructed the state election commission to begin preparations and notify the court within four weeks. Acting on this directive, the commission has started the groundwork for conducting the elections.
State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare announced on Monday that the entire preparatory process will span several months. “The ward formation process will take approximately 70 days, followed by a 15-day period for implementing reservations. Updating the electoral rolls will require an additional 40 days,” he said.
Waghmare added that once these formalities are completed, the long-delayed local body elections can finally be held before the close of 2025.
