Nagpur University has made a major change in its undergraduate admission process starting from the 2025-26 academic year. The university has discontinued the centralised online registration system, which was previously mandatory for students seeking admission to affiliated colleges.
From now on, students will have to apply directly to the colleges where they want to take admission.
Until last year, candidates had to register on the university’s online portal as the first step in the admission process. The university also followed a common admission schedule to maintain uniformity across its 514 affiliated colleges.
The decision to scrap the online registration system was taken at the university’s Senate meeting held on January 2, 2025. A circular implementing the change was issued recently, officially handing over the admission responsibilities to individual colleges.
As per current rules, admissions must still be granted based on merit lists and must follow government reservation policies. However, several Senate members have expressed concerns about some colleges not following the norms — such as skipping merit list publication or ignoring reservation guidelines.
So far, the university has not introduced any mechanism to monitor these violations.
Nagpur University has more than 1.5 lakh undergraduate seats across various streams: around 40,000 in arts, 30,000 in commerce, 35,000 in science, 1,500 in law, 500 in home science, and 600 in home economics.
