A stunning celestial halo encircling the sun left residents of Nagpur in awe on Wednesday, as a rare atmospheric phenomenon lit up the skies.
The perfectly round ring of light, known as a 22-degree halo, was visible around midday and was captured by Laksh Rathi, a local nature enthusiast. The striking image quickly gained traction among social media users and nature lovers.
According to meteorologists, the halo is caused by sunlight refracting through hexagonal ice crystals in high-altitude cirrostratus clouds, typically over 20,000 feet above the ground.
“These halos are fascinating displays of optical science and atmospheric dynamics,” said an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Nagpur. Though harmless, such occurrences are rare and tend to generate widespread public interest.
While some cultures view sun halos as signs of change, for many in Nagpur, it was simply a moment of natural wonder amid the city’s daily bustle.
