A 22-year-old third-year MBBS student was allegedly drugged and raped by two of her classmates and their friend in Maharashtra’s Sangli district on May 18. All three accused—residents of Pune, Solapur, and Sangli—have been arrested and are currently in police custody till May 27.
According to the police, the survivor, who hails from Belagavi in Karnataka, stated that she was invited by the trio to watch a late-night movie. Before proceeding to the theatre, they stopped at a flat where she was reportedly offered a drink spiked with a sedative. Soon after consuming the beverage, she began to feel disoriented.
The accused, aged between 20 and 22, then allegedly took turns to sexually assault her. They also threatened her with consequences if she disclosed the incident.
The survivor later informed her parents, following which a complaint was lodged at the Vishrambag police station. A case has been registered under gang rape charges and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police officials have begun recording detailed statements and are in the process of gathering forensic evidence. “Further investigation is underway to examine all aspects of the case,” said a senior officer.
