A horrifying late-night hit-and-run incident near Ajni Square on Friday has left a local advocate critically injured, reigniting public fury over drunk driving and raising serious questions about road safety enforcement in the city.
The victim, Advocate Syed Mubbashir, was struck and dragged for several meters by a speeding WagonR (MH 49 CD 0645), reportedly driven by a man under the influence of alcohol. Eyewitnesses recounted that the driver showed no signs of stopping after the impact, continuing to drive recklessly even as the injured advocate was trapped.
Alert passersby quickly intervened, forcing the car to halt and pulling the severely injured lawyer to safety. Mubbashir was immediately shifted to Citrizon Hospital, where doctors confirmed he is being treated for multiple fractures and other serious trauma.
Police from Bajaj Nagar Police Station have registered an FIR and taken the driver into custody. However, reports suggest the accused was released after being issued a notice under standard legal provisions, a move that has sparked strong backlash from the legal community and concerned citizens alike.
Members of the legal fraternity, along with local residents, have condemned the incident and demanded the driver’s immediate arrest, calling the current response inadequate given the gravity of the offense. Many have pointed out that leniency in such cases only emboldens reckless behavior behind the wheel.
“This isn’t just a traffic violation — it’s a life-threatening crime,” said one senior advocate. “Drunk driving should carry serious consequences, not just a notice and release.”
The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stringent measures against impaired driving, especially in urban areas where pedestrian and motorist safety is increasingly under threat. Citizens are now pressing authorities to adopt zero-tolerance policies and ensure that justice is not just promised, but visibly delivered.
