Following a detailed review by experts at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the construction of a 1.5-metre-wide footpath along the entire length of the Butibori flyover. This move comes as part of a corrective safety measure, aimed at preventing future structural damage caused by heavy vehicle traffic.
The Butibori flyover, which developed cracks in its piers just 13 months after commissioning, had initially been built without a pedestrian footpath—a standard feature in Road over Bridges (RoBs) and flyovers. The omission has now come under scrutiny, with experts questioning how such a crucial element was overlooked in the original design.
According to VNIT’s report, the footpath will help guide heavy vehicles, such as trailers carrying 25 to 30 tonnes, to remain on the central section of the bridge. Analysis revealed that structural damage in December 2024 may have been caused when a heavy trailer veered toward the left side of the flyover. By adding the footpath on both sides, engineers aim to reinforce the outer edges and ensure load-bearing is centralized, reducing future risks.
Construction of the footpath is expected to take approximately one month. Despite ongoing work, vehicular traffic will continue to move normally. To facilitate this, Butibori Police Station, under the supervision of PI Pratap Bhosale, will monitor traffic flow and ensure the construction activity causes minimal inconvenience to commuters.
NHAI’s earlier engagement with VNIT to investigate the flyover’s early structural distress underscored the need for a thorough and scientific assessment. The authority has also cautioned against speculation regarding construction quality, noting that multiple factors may have contributed to the pier damage.
The footpath addition marks a key step in reinforcing the flyover’s structural integrity and ensuring safer passage for both vehicles and, potentially, pedestrians.
