In a notable development in the judicial appointment process, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, has recommended the elevation of three High Court judges, including Justice Atul S. Chandurkar of the Bombay High Court, to the Supreme Court of India.
The other two judges proposed for elevation are: Justice N.V. Anjaria, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court and Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court
The recommendations were made public on Monday and will take effect once approved by the Central Government.
Justice Chandurkar: From Nagpur Bar to Supreme Court Bench
Justice Atul S. Chandurkar, known for his reasoned and impartial judgments, was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013, and became a permanent judge on March 2, 2016. His judicial portfolio includes key rulings on mediclaim disputes, administrative matters, and IT Rules, 2023.
Prior to his judgeship, Chandurkar practiced law under senior advocate B.N. Naik in Mumbai and had an extensive legal career at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. His elevation is widely viewed as a recognition of his legal acumen and commitment to justice.
