Nagpur: In a major technological advancement for law enforcement, the Nagpur City Police officially launched the “Garud Drishti” tool—a sophisticated social media monitoring and intelligence system—along with a state-of-the-art Cyber Lab under the ongoing CyberHack Event 2025. These initiatives are designed to address the growing misuse of social media platforms for spreading misinformation, inciting violence, encouraging criminal activities, and posing threats to national security.
“Garud Drishti” is a cutting-edge digital tool that enables the police to monitor real-time content across popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter). It uses keyword and hashtag tracking to identify potential threats related to crime, terrorism, and violence. The tool also features AI-driven image search capabilities, allowing it to detect visuals related to weapons or violence, even when there is no accompanying text.
In addition to monitoring, the system can automatically generate intelligence by classifying posts under categories such as political sensitivity, religious sentiments, criminal intent, or VIP threats. These reports will be compiled and sent daily to local police stations for prompt action. The tool also includes a built-in reporting mechanism compatible with social media platforms’ official complaint systems, enabling law enforcement to flag objectionable posts, videos, and accounts for review or removal.
“Garud Drishti” is compliant with legal protocols under the Information Technology Act, particularly Sections 79 and 69, which pertain to content removal and national security. It also adheres to relevant provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), such as Sections 196, 299, and 353, ensuring that collected data can be used for legal proceedings. To support this, the tool maintains secure logs of all flagged activities.
One of the most advanced features of “Garud Drishti” is its facial recognition capability, which uses artificial intelligence to identify suspects from publicly available images and videos on social media. This will significantly enhance investigation speed and accuracy, especially in cases involving missing persons or wanted criminals.
Simultaneously, the Nagpur Police inaugurated a new Cyber Lab equipped with modern forensic tools. These include a Call Detail Record (CDR) Analysis Tool for tracking call history, social interactions, and location data; Cellebrite software for retrieving data from mobile devices; Gargoyle Investigator MP for detecting malware on computers; and Cellebrite Premium, which allows extraction and analysis of encrypted data from both iOS and Android devices.
Together, “Garud Drishti” and the new Cyber Lab mark a significant leap forward in Nagpur Police’s digital capabilities. These innovations are expected to improve preventive policing, enable faster and more data-driven investigations, and reduce dependence on manual monitoring. More importantly, they represent a proactive step towards ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order in an increasingly digital society.
