In a disturbing revelation from Mangalwari Zone, garbage collection workers employed by a private company under the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) are openly demanding bribes from residents—especially women—under the guise of “tea and snacks” money. Refuse to pay, and your garbage stays right where it is.
Areas like Suraj Nagar and Mahanubhav Nagar are the worst hit. If a resident pays, the garbage is collected promptly. If not, workers skip the house altogether—even if trash is lying outside.
One outrageous incident occurred near Asif Kirana in Suraj Nagar. A woman, holding her child, placed four garbage bags outside her home. When the collection truck arrived, the worker arrogantly asked who would load the trash. Seeing the woman unable to do so, he reluctantly picked up three bags—then demanded a bribe. When she refused, he left the fourth bag behind and drove off in a huff.
This raises serious concerns: NMC pays crores of taxpayer money to these contractors each month—so why are residents being extorted? Are workers not paid? Or is this unchecked power gone rogue?
If this continues, Nagpur’s dream of becoming a clean, Indore-like city will remain just that—a dream.
Mangalwari health officer Pramod Atram acknowledged the issue and assured that the company will be warned and staff will be instructed to stop such misconduct.
But enough talk—it’s time for action. Nagpur’s citizens deserve better. Cleanliness should not come at the cost of dignity and extortio
