Nagpur’s cement roads, once seen as a sign of progress, are now raising concerns among residents. The rapid concreting of internal roads has led to many of them being built higher than nearby houses, increasing the risk of water entering homes even during light rainfall.
Officials from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) say that nearly 300 km of city roads have already been concretized. Additionally, roads under the NHAI, PWD, and NIT are also undergoing similar upgrades.
According to a media report, the city is facing nearly 70 waterlogging hotspots, many linked to poorly planned cement road construction. In the first three phases—covering 100 km of roads at a cost of ₹700 crore—drainage systems were not included. It was only after severe monsoon flooding that officials took note. Now, in Phase 4, drainage lines are finally being installed along with the roads.
Phase 4 includes 12.66 km of roads, built at a cost of ₹300 crore. Upcoming Phase 5 and Phase 6 will add another 12.87 km and 14.75 km of cement roads, respectively. Last monsoon, poorly planned road elevation in South Nagpur caused serious water intrusion in homes. In Manewada, parts of the cement road had to be broken to let the water drain.
