A major traffic mess at Medical Square on Thursday evening once again showed how poor traffic management is putting lives at risk in the city. Located close to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the area turned into a nightmare for commuters and more seriously, for ambulances carrying critical patients.
From 5 pm to 8 pm, the junction where six key roads meet was completely jammed. The area was filled with honking vehicles, frustrated drivers, and total disorder. Among the stuck vehicles were 10 to 12 ambulances, possibly rushing patients to GMCH and nearby hospitals. Around 25 private long-distance buses and hundreds of cars and two-wheelers were also trapped in the mess.
Surprisingly, there were no traffic police present for nearly two hours. By the time they arrived, the situation had already gotten out of control. Tempers flared, delays mounted, and emergency services were left helpless in the chaos.
The jam didn’t just affect Medical Square. Roads leading from Reshimbagh Square to Baidyanath Square and from Ashok Square also choked up, causing long queues of vehicles across the stretch and worsening the gridlock.
Daily traffic jams at Medical Square, an important junction near GMCH, have become a serious problem. Ambulances and emergency vehicles often get stuck in long lines, showing the urgent need for better traffic management
