A new wave of digital payment fraud has surfaced in Nagpur’s Kalamna area, where a group of young fraudsters has reportedly duped at least three electrical shops using a sophisticated fake payment trick. The total estimated loss ranges between ₹20,000 and ₹25,000.
According to local sources, the fraudsters exploit the widespread use of digital payments by simulating successful UPI transactions. The scam involves displaying a fabricated payment confirmation screen and playing an audio cue of “Payment received” through a portable speaker—convincing enough for shopkeepers to believe the transaction has gone through.
The con artists allegedly bring their own QR codes and speaker devices. In one instance captured on CCTV, two young men are seen purchasing electric wires. One of them distracts the shopkeeper by scanning a QR code and confirming fake billing details, while the other quietly exits with the goods.
Despite multiple incidents, no formal complaint had been filed with the police as of Saturday evening. However, the issue has caused growing concern among local business owners. Video footage of the suspected fraudsters is now being circulated widely in trader WhatsApp groups to warn others.
Experts have urged shopkeepers to not rely solely on audio confirmations. “Always verify the customer’s name and payment confirmation on your own device,” said a cybersecurity advisor familiar with digital transaction frauds.
