In a major step towards beautifying the city and preventing pollution in its rivers and drains, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has approved the construction of 15 vertical gardens on protective walls of bridges built over the Nag Nadi, Pohra River, and major city drains.

The initiative, proposed by Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, aims to enhance the visual appeal of key roadways while discouraging citizens from dumping waste into the drains. According to observations, people often throw garbage from bridges into the open drains, which contributes to pollution and degrades the city’s cleanliness.
With an estimated budget of ₹5.10 crore (₹5,10,73,670), the project will feature vertical gardens designed using plant species such as Riho Plant, Jade Plant, Pandanus Plant, Purple Heart Plant, and Wedelia Plant. The gardens will be protected by mesh fencing for safety and durability.
The NMC has already granted administrative approval and will soon invite tenders for execution. Based on inspections carried out across the city, the following 15 locations have been selected for the vertical gardens:
- Ajni Chowk, Wardha Road
- Behind Somalwar Khapri School, Sahakar Nagar Ghat
- Shankar Nagar Drain, near Shankar Nagar Post Office
- Near Yashwant Stadium Bridge, Nag River
- Narendra Nagar Chowk Bridge
- Chinchbhavan Nala, Wardha Road
- Reshimbagh Chowk, near Mehendi Lawn
- Nag River Bridge, Old Shukrawari Road
- Manewada Ring Road
- Rambagh Drain, Baidyanath Chowk
- Sardar Patel Road
- Jagannath Chowk Drain, near Gangabai Ghat
- Omkar Lawn, Dighori
- Ashok Chowk, Aashinagar Drain
- Jafar Nagar, near Paloti School
Once implemented, the vertical gardens are expected to not only improve the aesthetics of these areas but also serve as a deterrent to waste dumping and promote environmental awareness among citizens.
