On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) has stepped up its fight against single-use plastic, sending a strong message about curbing plastic pollution and taking strict action against violators.
In recent years, Nagpur has seen a growing problem of plastic waste. Although there is a state-wide ban on single-use plastic, it is still being used in certain areas, particularly by street vendors, shopkeepers, and illegal producers. However, this year, the NDS is taking a much tougher stand.
In the days leading up to World Environment Day, the Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) launched a series of surprise inspections, raids, and awareness campaigns. One of the major crackdowns took place in the Kalamna area, where over 2,100 kg of banned plastic was seized from an illegal manufacturing unit. The unit was producing mostly non-woven and thin plastic carry bags without any official approval.
The raid, carried out with support from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), uncovered a network supplying banned plastic locally. Since 2018, the NMC has fined over 4,300 violators, collecting a total of ₹2.24 crore. However, the recent surge in action shows a renewed commitment to tackling the issue more strictly.
Officials are now equipped with mobile surveillance units, QR-code-enabled receipt systems, and stronger legal provisions to take stricter action against repeat offenders.
“We cannot afford to let plastic kill our city. This is not just a legal battle it’s an environmental emer-gency,” said an NDS officer during an awareness rally at Sitabuldi.
Citizens, school students, and eco-volunteers actively participated in the rally, holding placards with messages like “Say No to Single-Use” and “Nagpur Goes Green.”
To create lasting change, the NMC is distributing cloth bags, running plastic collection drives, and setting up plastic shredding units in public areas. Officials highlighted that this year’s theme, “Our Land, Our Future,” perfectly aligns with the city’s mission to clear plastic waste from its streets, drains, and landfills.
As Nagpur moves toward a cleaner and greener future, the NDS’s strong crackdown sends a clear message of responsibility and action. On this World Environment Day, the message is loud and clear — plastic might be cheap, but its cost to the planet is far too great.
