The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has submitted a proposal to the Maharashtra Government to procure 240 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme, aiming to replace its aging fleet of 237 diesel buses introduced over a decade ago under the JNNURM scheme. This move aligns with NMC’s efforts to promote clean mobility and improve public transport.
Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari has written to the Urban Development Department requesting approval for 140 standard 12-metre AC electric buses and 100 midi 9-metre AC electric buses. The proposal follows a directive from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), asking urban local bodies to indicate demand under the Centre’s initiative.
Nagpur, previously allotted 150 electric buses under the scheme, is looking to further expand its green fleet. The NMC has expressed readiness, citing the development of charging infrastructure and supporting power systems.
Aapli Bus Administrative Officer Sonam Deshmukh confirmed that a detailed proposal, including technical specifications and infrastructure readiness, has been submitted to the state-level steering committee. “The new buses will reduce emissions and improve both air quality and commuter comfort,” she added.
Currently, the city’s fleet includes 230 electric buses—184 AC and 46 non-AC—along with 150 midi and 45 mini buses. These operate on 129 routes, completing around 6,209 trips and covering nearly one lakh kilometres daily, serving about 1.17 lakh passengers.
To further boost the green fleet, NMC plans to add 400 more AC electric buses this year—250 from the state and 150 under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme. The first batch of 40 buses from the Centre is expected by July. Charging depots are being built at Koradi and Khapri, while Wathoda will support state-allotted buses.
