Maharashtra’s long-delayed Vidhan Bhavan expansion project in Nagpur has officially been approved, paving the way for the ambitious ‘Nagpur Vista’ plan—an ultra-modern legislative complex modeled along the lines of Delhi’s Central Vista. The project aims to cater to the state’s legislative needs for the next 50 years and is expected to be completed within two years.
Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar confirmed the development and emphasized that while the new infrastructure will be modern and eco-friendly, the heritage building of Vidhan Bhavan will remain intact. “The new design will complement the existing architecture without disrupting its historical value,” Narvekar told a local publication. The final project presentation is scheduled for June 25, to be followed by a review from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. A formal groundbreaking is planned during the Winter Session in December.
Modern Facilities, Heritage Harmony
The new complex will include a central hall with a 400-member seating capacity for the Assembly, a 125-seat Legislative Council chamber, and improved facilities for lawmakers. A political museum tracing Maharashtra’s legislative history is also part of the plan.
Land measuring 16,000 sq. m. from the Government Press, along with a nearby 2,000 sq. m. triangular plot near Zero Mile, has been earmarked for the project. Of this, 9,000 sq. m. is currently vacant, enabling immediate groundwork.
Green and Future-Ready
Environmental sustainability is a key focus, with extensive tree plantations planned. Land acquisition issues have been resolved, and authorities say construction will now move ahead in “mission mode.” A high-level review meeting was recently held at Vidhan Bhavan, attended by senior officials from MSRDC, PWD, architects, and design experts.
The Nagpur Vista project is seen as a major step in upgrading legislative infrastructure in the state’s second capital, long overdue after years of planning and delays.
