In a major crackdown on illegal cattle transport ahead of Eid al-Adha, the Nagpur City Police rescued 238 bovines from a godown in Gandhi Nagar, Kamptee. The animals were found confined in extremely cruel conditions, allegedly meant for illegal slaughter. The raid was carried out between 6:00 PM on June 5 and 3:20 AM on June 6.

Acting on a tip-off, the Old Kamptee Police, under the leadership of PI Prashant Jumade, launched the operation with assistance from New Kamptee, Kalamna, and Pardi Police Stations, along with the Reserve Company (RCP) unit. The team raided a godown near Bhaji Mandi in Gandhi Nagar, where they discovered the cattle tied in cramped spaces without access to food or water. Several animals were found injured and in distress, with signs of serious abuse.

According to police, the total value of the rescued animals is estimated at ₹23.8 lakh. All 238 bovines have been shifted to a shelter in Lumbini Nagar, Kamptee, for proper care and rehabilitation.
During the investigation, the cattle were found to be in the illegal possession of five accused individuals, all residents of Nagpur. They have been identified as Nabbu Wazir Qureshi, Sajid Qutub Qureshi, Zubair Altab Qureshi, Faiyaz Sattar Qureshi, and Asif Qureshi.
Based on a complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Ramesh Dubale of Old Kamptee Police Station, a case has been registered under Sections 5(b) and 9(a) of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1976 (Amended 1995), along with Sections 11(1)(a), 11(1)(h), 11(1)(k), 11(1)(i), and 11(1)(d) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
The police are continuing their investigation to trace the accused, who are currently absconding, and are also probing possible links to a larger cattle smuggling operation.
This operation was conducted under the guidance of Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal. The city police have intensified vigilance and are taking proactive steps to prevent illegal cattle transport and slaughter, particularly during the days leading up to Eid al-Adha.
