To mark World Environment Day, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) unveiled a striking ‘Earth Sculpture’ made entirely from discarded plastic bottles near Mahesh Square, close to the Traffic Park. Shaped like a giant plastic bottle, the installation symbolizes the environmental threat posed by plastic waste and aims to raise public awareness.
NMC Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari inaugurated the sculpture and highlighted several eco-friendly measures undertaken by the civic body, including electric buses, tree plantation, and improved solid waste management. He encouraged citizens to minimize plastic use and adopt proper waste segregation practices.
The sculpture was designed by artist Nikhil Bonde, who was felicitated at the event for his innovative contribution to environmental awareness. Prominent attendees included UCN Director Ashutosh Kane, Jagdish Palia, Ajay Khamankar, artist Vivek Ranade, editor Rajesh Singh, and Divyesh Dwivedi.
As part of the awareness campaign, more than 15,000 students from 70 schools participated in programs aimed at promoting sustainability and eco-conscious living. The event was coordinated by Ankit Agrawal.
By combining art with environmental activism, NMC’s initiative sends a powerful message about the impact of plastic pollution and the collective responsibility of citizens to protect the planet.
