In a bid to streamline pedestrian movement and enhance metro accessibility, Maha Metro has begun construction of a new skywalk at Cotton Market Square—one of Nagpur’s busiest intersections. The skywalk is expected to benefit not only metro users but also pedestrians and motorists traveling through the junction.
According to Maha Metro officials, the structure is being anchored by concrete extensions from central metro pillars at the square. The first phase of girder casting—where steel rods protruding from the main pillar were concreted and plastered—has already been completed, though it caused temporary disruptions to vehicular traffic.
A similar process will now be carried out on a second pillar located towards Ghat Road. The skywalk will eventually connect these two pillars, providing a raised pedestrian corridor over the bustling square.
The landing point of the skywalk will be on the right side of Ghat Road, where construction is already underway. Speaking to Lokmat Times, Rajeev Tyagi, Project Director at Maha Metro, explained that the Cotton Market metro station was developed as part of Phase 1 of the Nagpur Metro project. Currently, the station has a single entry point on the Mahatma Phule Market side. The new skywalk will provide an additional entry directly opposite the existing one, significantly easing commuter flow.
The project is expected to be completed by October or November this year, Tyagi added.
Once completed, the Cotton Market end of the skywalk will also be developed into a commercial hub. Plans include retail outlets, staircases, and two elevators, along with a parking area to serve metro passengers accessing the station through the new walkway.
