Nagpur and the rest of Vidarbha are back to sweltering heat after a short relief. Despite the monsoon arriving early, dry conditions continue, sending temperatures soaring. On June 8, Nagpur sizzled at 43°C, while Bramhapuri topped the charts in Maharashtra with 43.6°C.
Despite the monsoon having officially arrived 18 days ahead of schedule, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported no rainfall across Vidarbha on Sunday till 8.30 pm. The ongoing dry spell, which began on June 1, has now extended over a week, frustrating residents who were hopeful of relief from the early onset.
Despite the monsoon arriving 18 days early, Vidarbha saw no rainfall till 8.30 pm on Sunday, according to the IMD. The dry spell that began on June 1 continues, leaving residents disappointed as hopes of early relief fade.
The intense heat extended beyond Nagpur and Bramhapuri, with several Vidarbha cities recording maximum temperatures above 41°C—Gondia (42.1°C), Bhandara and Amravati (41.6°C), Wardha (41.5°C), and Akola (41.2°C). The region remains dry and firmly in the grip of harsh summer conditions.
The IMD’s early monsoon announcement in mid-May brought a wave of hope as parts of eastern Maharashtra saw the first signs of rain. But that hope quickly faded. Since June began, there hasn’t been a single proper spell of rain. Nagpur got a brief drizzle last week, but it was too fleeting to make any real difference.
According to IMD officials, breaks in the monsoon during June are fairly common due to changing atmospheric conditions that can disrupt rain systems. This current dry spell is likely to continue until at least June 11, with rains expected to return sometime by mid-next week.
Humidity levels in Nagpur stayed moderate on Sunday—57% in the morning and dropping to 30% by evening. With clear skies and the sun beating down, the discomfort only grew. The minimum temperature settled at 28.4°C, offering little relief after sunset.
