A new food plaza is being developed near Kachipura Square by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). However, the move has raised eyebrows, as the corporation’s previous attempt—the ‘Khau Galli’ project launched in 2020—failed to take off. The upcoming venture now faces skepticism over its potential success.
The ‘Khau Galli’ initiative—an otherwise promising concept aimed at offering a variety of street food near the scenic Gandhisagar lake, adjacent to the Raman Science Centre—was marred by political tensions. A power struggle between the Maha Vikas Aghadi-led state government and the BJP-led Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) disrupted the project’s momentum. Hopes were briefly revived when Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Khau Galli with 32 stalls on January 9, 2020. However, in a surprising turn, the food street shut down the very next day and never reopened.
