Construction of a new bridge next to the historic Lohapul railway bridge, which links East and West Nagpur, is underway. The existing bridge has been closed to traffic to allow work to proceed. Currently, underground utilities are being shifted and a new drainage line is being laid. Concreting of the foundation will follow.
If work continues at the current pace and the monsoon doesn’t delay progress, officials expect the bridge to be completed in three to four months. The ₹3 crore project is being executed by CS Construction India Pvt. Ltd. under Central Railway’s construction department.
Currently, trains run on the Lohapul and Dhantoli bridges between Nagpur railway station and Ajni under Central Railway’s Nagpur Division. As part of the nearly complete third and fourth railway line expansion between Nagpur and Wardha, a new bridge is being constructed to support the additional tracks. Roadblocks have been set up to enable the shifting of service cables and the replacement of old drainage systems.
The initial phase is nearly complete, with iron rod meshwork laid for the foundation. Officials say once concreting begins, work will move faster. Unlike push box-type bridges, this is a traditional structure and, weather permitting, should be completed in about three months.
Key Link for Third and Fourth Railway Lines
Work on the third and fourth railway lines between Nagpur and Wardha is progressing well. The section from Sindi to Selu Road is nearing completion, and the line now extends up to Ajni. Only 17 km remains—12 km from Selu Road to Sevagram, 2.5 km from Sevagram to Wardha, and 2.5 km from Ajni to Nagpur station. The new bridge near Lohapul is vital for supporting these additional tracks, especially between Ajni and Nagpur station.
