Thursday night brought yet another round of power outages in parts of Nagpur, including Manish Nagar, Narendra Nagar, and Manewada. What’s frustrating residents even more is that these same areas had already faced long power cuts just a day earlier due to scheduled maintenance. The fresh outage, this time blamed on technical glitches, has cast doubts on the quality and impact of the maintenance work.
Power supply disruptions have now become a common feature in the city, often triggered by the slightest wind or drizzle. While the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has launched pre-monsoon maintenance work, the results on the ground tell a different story. On Wednesday, power supply was switched off across several areas to carry out this upkeep. Citing time constraints, MSEDCL has extended maintenance into other days as well—but without much relief for consumers.
On Thursday, a malfunction in the whistle unit at the Chinchbhavan substation plunged several neighborhoods into darkness yet again.
Sources say that the contractors responsible for the maintenance work aren’t delivering on expectations. Key tasks like trimming overgrown trees near power lines and tightening electrical joints are either being neglected or inadequately done, raising serious concerns about preparedness ahead of the full monsoon season.
