Scorching heat and stifling humidity have gripped Vidarbha for the past 15 days, making daily life increasingly uncomfortable for residents.
However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that conditions are now favourable for the revival of the southwest monsoon across Central India, including Vidarbha, starting June 14, following a dry spell after its early onset in parts of Gadchiroli.
Although the southwest monsoon arrived early in Vidarbha on May 29, its advance has since stalled, with its northern reach limited to a few areas in Gadchiroli.
The monsoon’s progress has hit a pause, leaving large parts of the country — including North India — still waiting for rainfall.
In Vidarbha, the southwest monsoon usually arrives around June 15. However, with this year’s early onset, other regions in the area are expected to receive monsoon showers in the coming days.
The Northern Limit of the southwest monsoon currently extends through Mumbai, Ahilyanagar, Adilabad, Gadchiroli, Bhawanipatna, Puri, Sandhead Island, and Balurghat.
According to a press release issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday, conditions are favourable for the further advancement of the monsoon into more parts of Central and adjoining East India — including additional areas of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha — over the next 24 hours.
The trough currently extends from central parts of Pakistan to Vidarbha, passing through central Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh at an altitude of 0.9 km above mean sea level, the IMD stated.
There has been no significant change in maximum temperatures across the region. While temperatures remained appreciably above normal in West Madhya Pradesh and above normal in East Madhya Pradesh, they were near normal in Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh.
The weather department also forecast no major change in maximum temperatures over the next 24 hours, followed by a likely drop of 2–3°C in the days to follow.
In the past 36 hours, several parts of Vidarbha experienced light to moderate rainfall. Buldana recorded the highest rainfall at 392 mm, followed by Bramhapuri with 9 mm and Akola with 6.7 mm. Nagpur city also witnessed scattered light showers on Friday evening.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall across many parts of Vidarbha between June 15 and 19, with Nagpur district also expected to receive rain in the coming days.
