Dr. Sushant Deshmukh was on duty at the hospital when the Air India flight crashed nearby
Dr. Sushant Deshmukh, a young doctor from Nagpur, was busy attending to patients at the OPD of B J Medical College in Ahmedabad, just like any other day.
Without warning, a loud explosion echoed through the air, and flames began falling from the sky. In a matter of seconds, everything changed—Air India’s Dreamliner flight AI-171 had crashed into the college hostel building, turning a normal morning into a scene of devastation.
According to a media report, Dr. Sushant Deshmukh, who witnessed the terrifying scene after the crash, said that a slight change in the plane’s direction could have resulted in a direct hit on the hospital, endangering hundreds of lives.
“This will Dr Sushant Deshmukh seem strange to everyone, but the damage was relatively less due to the collision with the hostel,” he remarked.
When Dr. Sushant, who was stationed just a short distance from the crash site, saw the flames erupting, he left his ongoing treatment work and rushed to the scene without a second thought.
Without stopping, he began assisting those in need—rescuing the injured, helping people to safety, and looking for friends’ relatives amid the chaos. In his tireless efforts, he didn’t even realize when night turned into morning.
Sympathy Amid Pain
The families of two students are still searching for their loved ones after the tragic crash, while over 50 hostel residents were injured—three of them remain in the ICU.
Dr. Sushant’s own hostel was completely gutted in the fire. Now staying at a friend’s place, he said, “The hostel has been reduced to ashes, but life has been saved, that is enough.”
A Mother’s Concern, An Example of Humanity
While the tragic crash has raised serious questions, it also revealed the courage and compassion shown by doctors beyond hospital walls. Dr. Sushant’s quick response and deep empathy not only fulfilled his duty as a doctor but also became a powerful example of humanity in action.
Nagpur’s senior gynecologist Dr. Sushma Deshmukh, mother of Dr. Sushant, shared, “Sushant had called immediately after the accident, but both of us were in surgery. When we spoke later, he said, I am safe, but my mind is worried for his friends and their family.”
