Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), in a major CSR initiative, has sanctioned ₹2.00 Crores for the desilting and cleaning of the Erai River in Chandrapur.
The District Administration, Chandrapur, had initiated a mission from 25th April to 10th June 2025 to desilt the Erai River stretch from Chandrapur City to its confluence with the Wardha River, aiming to prevent monsoon flooding, improve hygiene, and mitigate serious public health hazards caused by water stagnation and pollution.

WCL, being a key stakeholder in the local ecosystem due to the proximity of its operational mines, responded to the request made by the District Collector, Chandrapur. Accordingly, on 09.06.2025, an MoU for the said work was signed at a ceremony held at Niyojan Bhavan in Chandrapur. The MoU was signed by Shri Harshad Datar, Area General Manager, Chandrapur Area on behalf of WCL and Shri Vipin Paliwal, Commissioner on behalf of the Municipal Corporation of Chandrapur.
The event was held in the presence of eminent dignitaries including Shri Vinay Gowda G.C. (District Collector), Shri Pulkit Singh (CEO) of Chandrapur Zilla Parishad , Shri Sudarshan Mummaka (Superintendent of police chandrapur), Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Janabai Ramaji Uike (Guardian Minister) Chandrapur, Smt. Pratibha Suresh Dhanorkar (MP, Chandrapur), Dr. Kirsan Namdeo (MP, Gadchiroli–Chimur), Shri Vijay Namdevrao Wadettiwar (Leader of Opposition, Maharashtra), Shri KirtiKumar Mitesh Bhangdiya, Shri Kishore Jorgewar, Shri Subhash Dhote, Shri Karan Sanjay Deotale (MLAs), and Shri Sudhakar Govindrao Adbale, Shri Abhijit Govindrao Wanjarri (MLCs).
It is pertinent to mention that WCL had previously contributed a total of ₹5.41 Crores from its Environment Fund to support desilting of the same river under similar environmental and public safety concerns.
