Tragedy struck a popular monsoon getaway on Sunday when a bridge spanning the Indrayani river in Kundmala, located in Pune’s Maval taluka, collapsed unexpectedly, resulting in at least six confirmed deaths. Several others are feared missing and may have been swept away by the strong river currents.
The incident occurred amid heavy monsoon activity, drawing large crowds to Kundmala—a scenic tourist spot known for its lush surroundings during the rainy season. Eyewitnesses reported a sudden structural failure of the bridge, which gave way while multiple tourists were on it.
Local MLA Sunil Shelke stated that approximately 20 to 25 individuals were on or near the bridge when it collapsed. Search and rescue operations are underway, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities combing the riverbanks and waters for survivors.
Authorities have yet to confirm the total number of missing persons. Emergency services have been mobilized, and the district administration has urged the public to stay away from riverbanks and unstable structures during the ongoing monsoon.
