A devastating fire broke out at the Jaikamal Complex near Gandhigate in Mahal on Saturday evening, leaving two people dead and two others critically injured. The incident occurred around 7:30 PM in a warehouse storing decorative materials and fancy firecrackers located on the first floor of the commercial-residential building.
The deceased have been identified as Girish Khatri (35), owner of M.K. Light House, and Vitthal Dhode (25). Both were trapped inside the warehouse when the fire broke out. Two others, Gunvant Nagpurkar (28) and Aishwarya Trivedi, were rescued by fire personnel and rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.
According to locals, welding work inside the warehouse likely triggered the fire. The warehouse contained cold pyros, halogen lights, electric décor items, and other flammable materials. Residents of the complex panicked and rushed to safety as the fire quickly spread.
Six fire tenders from Ganjipeth Fire Station, under the command of Officer P.S. Saiyyad, managed to bring the blaze under control after a long firefighting operation.
Residents alleged that prior complaints were made to NMC and Kotwali Police regarding the storage of hazardous materials in the complex, but no action was taken. The incident has sparked anger and fear among locals.
The fire caused an estimated ₹10 lakh loss, but a major disaster was avoided as it didn’t spread to a nearby power distribution panel. Firefighters said property worth ₹7 crore was saved. Police are investigating the incident.
