Torrential rains wreaked havoc across several districts of Maharashtra, claiming at least eight lives—mostly due to lightning strikes—over the past 24 hours, officials confirmed on Sunday. Several others have sustained injuries as the monsoon intensified across the state.
In response to the severe weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the coastal districts of Ratnagiri and Raigad, indicating extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert has also been sounded for Palghar, Thane, Sindhudurg, and the ghat regions of Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur, urging residents and authorities to remain vigilant.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in vulnerable regions to assist with emergency operations.
According to the latest data from the State Disaster Management Department, Ratnagiri witnessed the highest rainfall at 88.1 mm, followed by Raigad (65.3 mm), Sindhudurg (43.8 mm), Thane (29.6 mm), and Yavatmal (27.5 mm) during the 24-hour period ending at 11 am on Sunday.
Authorities reported that eight fatalities occurred across various districts, with at least 10 individuals injured due to rain-related incidents.
The state government has urged residents in high-risk zones to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency helplines have been activated, and continuous monitoring of rainfall and river levels is underway to prevent further casualties.
