Nagpur University has named four new deans on a temporary basis after the tenure of the previous full-time deans ended on Saturday. Among the newly appointed deans are two women.
According to a media report, Professor Shyamrao Koreti has been retained as the dean of the Faculty of Humanities. He previously held this position on a full-time basis for the last five years and is currently a professor in the university’s postgraduate history department.
Professor Rajashri Vaishnaw from the postgraduate education department has returned as the dean of the Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty — a post she earlier held under then vice-chancellor S.P. Kane until 2020. She replaces engineering college principal Prashant Kadu.
Medha Kanetkar, principal of Shree Niketan Arts and Commerce College, has been assigned charge of the Commerce and Management Faculty. Meanwhile, Professor Umesh Palikundwar from the postgraduate physics department will oversee the Science and Technology Faculty. These two appointments replace Sanjay Kavishwar and Prashant Maheswari, respectively.
In an official order issued on Monday, the university administration confirmed that the vice-chancellor has approved these temporary appointments as additional charges, exercising powers under Section 16 of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016.
As per the official order, these teachers will hold the charge from June 16, 2025, until further orders. “Accordingly, the concerned teachers will perform the additional and daily duties of the dean’s post while performing their other duties,” the order said.
To compensate for the added responsibilities, an additional allowance of ₹5,000 per month has been sanctioned for them, as per the approval granted by the Management Council on June 15.
The full-time deans were originally appointed by former vice-chancellor Subhash Chaudhari, who passed away in September last year. While their tenure was supposed to end with the academic year in April, it was extended until June 15 to handle the university’s workload.
The process to appoint a new vice-chancellor is now gaining momentum, with Nagpur University preparing to issue a recruitment advertisement soon. Once a new VC is in place, full-time deans and a pro vice-chancellor are also expected to be appointed.
