In a significant breakthrough, Nagpur Police’s Crime Branch Unit 1 has busted an inter-state motorcycle theft racket, recovering 31 stolen two-wheelers worth ₹19.45 lakh. The accused duo allegedly sold the stolen vehicles at throwaway prices to unsuspecting farmers and labourers in rural Madhya Pradesh.
The operation was launched after constable Nitin Vasnik (Buckle No. 1305) received a tip-off about a habitual offender, Rahul Thakre alias Khakre, who was stealing motorcycles from various parts of Nagpur city. Rahul would reportedly deliver the stolen bikes to his brother, Dinesh Thakre alias Khakre, in Satner village, Athner tehsil, Betul district of Madhya Pradesh. Dinesh then sold the vehicles cheaply to villagers without informing them of their stolen status.
Acting on this intelligence, and with the approval of senior officers, a team from Crime Branch Unit 1 travelled to Betul with government and private vehicles. With assistance from Athner Police Station, they detained Dinesh from his residence. Upon questioning, he confessed to receiving stolen bikes from Rahul and selling them in nearby villages.
Two stolen bikes were initially seized from Dinesh’s house. Following further interrogation, police recovered 15 more two-wheelers from various villages in the vicinity, bringing the total recovered from Dinesh to 17.
Based on his statement, the team traced Rahul Thakre to More Lodge near his home in Pachjhopda, Kalamna. He was staying at the lodge instead of his residence and was taken into custody. Two stolen bikes were found parked below the lodge, and Rahul admitted to having sold another 12 bikes in villages around Nagpur. All 12 vehicles were later recovered.
In total, 31 motorcycles collectively valued at ₹19.45 lakh were recovered from the two accused. Investigations revealed that most buyers were unaware of the vehicles being stolen, as they were sold at unusually low prices.
The operation was executed under the guidance of Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal, Joint CP Navinchandra Reddy, Additional CP (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, DCP (Crime) Rahul Makanikar, and ACP Dr. Abhinit Patil. The field operation was led by Police Inspector Amol Deshmukh, Crime Branch Unit 1.
Accused:
1. Rahul Sukhchand Thakre alias Khakre (43), originally from Satner, Betul (MP), currently residing in Mini Mata Nagar, Kalamna, Nagpur.
2. Dinesh Sukhchand Thakre alias Khakre (37), resident of Satner village, Athner tehsil, Betul (MP).
The successful crackdown was carried out by a dedicated team of officers from Unit 1, supported by PSI Vivek Zhingre and the Cyber Team.
Notably, in June alone, Crime Branch Unit 1 recovered 31 bikes, Unit 5 seized 2, and the Anti-Vehicle Theft Squad recovered 10 more, collectively solving 43 vehicle theft cases in Nagpur.
Police have urged citizens to thoroughly verify ownership and documents before purchasing used two-wheelers, especially from unverified sources, to avoid falling victim to such criminal activities.
